They'll be a pre-trip meeting organized for the following morning by your leader and the opportunity to have dinner with the group in the evening and sample some great Thai food!

Keep an eye out for the welcome note at reception of the joining-point hotel explaining when and where to meet.

For those who arrive early, there is sightseeing information on the Intrepid noticeboard which is also at reception. Please note that very little time is spent on this trip in Bangkok so you may wish to arrive a few days early to fully enjoy this historical and fascinating city.

Tonight we stay in a centrally located 2 star standard hotel with restaurant.

Days 2-4 | Siem Reap/Angkor Wat

It is a long day's drive from Bangkok to Siem Reap in Cambodia (approx. 10 hours).

On days 3 and 4, we temple-hop from sunrise to sunset to make the most of our visit to the world-famous Angkor complex with our local guide. These temples were built between the 9th and 13th centuries when the Khmer Empire was the pre-eminent influence in South-East Asia. The temples were believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. The intricately carved bas-reliefs and architectural designs are mind-blowing and there are spectacular photographic opportunities at any time of day. The ruins are scattered over an area of some 160 sq km, but the main cluster of temples is close to Siem Reap so we will have plenty of time to fully appreciate the great archaeological sites of Angkor Wat, the Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm. Depending on the season there may be the option to visit the Tonle Sap Lake for a look at local life.

On these nights we stay in a 2 star standard hotel with restaurant and swimming pool.

Days 5-6 | Phnom Penh

On day 5 we leave Siem Reap on our private bus to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh (driving time approx. 5 hours). A great opportunity to look at the real Cambodia, we will make several stops at points of interest along the way, including an opportunity to sample the local cuisine of deep fried spiders.

In Phnom Penh we confront Cambodia's tragic past, on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. We then head out of the city to the Choueng Ek Memorial, where a stupa made up of some 8,000 human skulls marks the site of the infamous Killing Fields. To learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history, make an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Phnom Penh has many other attractions also, and there is free time to explore the Russian Market, the National Museum or Wat Phnom, a peaceful temple situated on a hill for which the city is named. You could also take a stroll along the famous Sisowath Quay and enjoy a coffee or cocktail at one of the many cafes while observing the busy river traffic.

On these nights we stay in a centrally located 2 star standard hotel.
