Liberia's recent history is filled with civil war but with the appointment of Africa's first woman president in 2006 people remain optimistic about its future.
The country has some rich rainforests and wildlife as well as attractive white, sandy beaches. Sadly, the presence of thousands of UN troops does not mean you can really explore this country and most visits will be limited to the capital Monrovia.
